Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
1 cup sugar 1/2 cup mild (light) molasses 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp. butter 1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tsp. ground cardamom 1/2 tsp. ground cloves 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/2 tsp. salt 3 1/4 cups all purpose flour 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda slivered almonds
Directions
Combine sugar, molasses and water in a large saucepan. Heat to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Add butter and stir until melted. Whisk in cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and salt. Remove pan from heat and cool completely. Stir together flour and baking soda in a medium bowl. Stir in flour mixture 1 cup at a time. Stir until smooth. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Line sheet pans with parchment paper. Roll out 1 cup of dough at a time to 1/8 inch thick. Cut out cookies with floured shaped cookie cutters. Place cookies 1 inch apart on prepared pans. Press some almonds into tops of cookies. Bake cookies about 8 minutes until set. Cool 5 minutes on pans. Transfer cookies to racks and cool completely. Repeat rolling and baking with remaining dough.
Makes about 6 dozen cookies.
