Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
9 cups sourdough or crusty italian bread cut into 1/2 inch cubes 24 ounces ground pork sausage 1/2 cup butter or margarine 3 cups chopped onion 2 cups chopped celery 2 tbsp. minced fresh garlic 4 1/2 cups peeled, cubed Golden Delicious apples 1 1/2 cips chopped toasted pecans 1/4 cup chopped fresh sage or 1 1/2 tbsp. dried 1 tbsp. dried thyme 1 1/4 tsp. salt 1 1/4 tsp. pepper 1 1/2 cups chicken broth
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread bread cubes on 2 baking sheets and bake 16 to 18 minutes, stirring once, until lightly toasted. Pour into a large bowl. Cook sausage in a large skillet over medium- high heat, breaking up chunks, until browned. Drain fat. Add sausage to bread in bowl. Wipe out skillet. Add butter and melt. Add onions, celery and garlic and cook about 8 minutes until almost tender. Add apples and cook about 5 minutes until apples are just tender. Add to bread along with pecans, sage, thyme, salt and pepper. Stir well to mix. Slowly add broth and toss stuffing until moistened.
Makes about 18 cups stuffing.
