Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour, divided 1 1/4 cups sugar 3/4 cup buttermilk 2 large eggs 2 tbsp. solid vegetable shortening 1 tbsp. vanilla extract 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt 3/4 tsp. ground nutmeg vegetable oil for frying powdered sugar
Directions
Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, sugar, buttermilk, eggs, vegetable shortening, vanilla, baking powder, baking soda, salt and nutmeg in a large bowl and beat until smooth. Beat in remaining 1 cup flour. Cover and refrigerate dough at least 1 hour.
Fill a large pot with oil to a depth of 5 inches and preheat to 350 degrees. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and roll out to 1/2 inch thick. Cut dough into rounds with a 3 inch round cookie cutter. Cut out the centers of the doughnuts with a 1 inch round cookie cutter. Fry 3 donuts at a time until golden, turning once, about 5 minutes. With a slotted spoon, transfer fried doughnuts to a paper towel lined rack to drain and cool. Sift powdered sugar over cooled doughnuts before serving.
Makes about 10 doughnuts.
