Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
1 cup water 1 cup butter 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 2 cups all purpose flour 2 cups sugar 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 large eggs 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease the inside of two 9 inch round cake pans. Line the bottom of each pan with a circle of greased wax paper. Place the water in a medium saucepan and heat to a boil. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in cocoa and butter until combined. Beat together flour, sugar and baking soda in a large bowl. Gradually beat in the cocoa mixture until well blended. Add the buttermilk, eggs and vanilla and beat until smooth. Divide the batter between the prepared pans. Bake the cakes about 30 to 35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Transfer the pans to a rack and let the cakes cool for 15 minutes. Invert the cakes on the rack and remove the pans. Peel off the wax paper and cool cakes completely. Fill and ice cakes with your favorite frosting.
Makes two 9 inch round cake layers.
