Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
2 cups brown sugar 1 1/2 cups water 1 cup chopped walnuts 1 cup raisins 1/2 cup chopped dates 1/3 cup solid vegetable shortening 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1 tsp. salt 2 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp. baking soda powdered sugar
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan. Combine sugar, water, walnuts, raisins, dates, shortening, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt in a medium saucepan and heat to a boil. Boil 3 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl and cool to lukewarm. Stir in flour and baking soda until well blended. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Bake about 40 to 45 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pan on rack. Cut into squares and dust with powdered sugar.
Makes about 2 dozen squares.
