Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
Crust: 1 cup all purpose flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1/3 cup cold solid vegetable shortening, diced 1/4 cup ice water
Filling: 7 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and very thinly sliced 1/2 cup sugar 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp. salt
Topping: 3/4 cup dark brown sugar 3/4 cup all purpose flour 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/3 cup cold butter, diced
Directions
For Crust: Stir together flour and salt in a medium bowl. Cut in shortening until crumbs form. Gradually stir in water until a dough forms. Gather dough into a ball then flatten to a disc. Cover dough tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate 30 minutes.
Roll dough out a 12 inch circle on a floured surface. Fit the dough into a 9 inch pie plate and trim overhang. Crimp edges decoratively.
For Filling: Toss together sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt in a medium bowl. Spoon the filling into the prepared pie crust.
For Topping: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Stir together brown sugar, flour and nutmeg in a small bowl. Cut in butter until coarse crumbs form. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.
Bake pie about 35 minutes until filling is bubbly and topping is golden brown. Transfer pie to a rack and cool completely.
Serves 8 to 12.
