Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
Crust: 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 1 cup butter, softened 1 large egg yolk 2/3 cup milk
Filling: 1 cup crushed corn flake cereal 8 cups peeled, sliced apples 1 cup sugar 1 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
Topping: 1 large egg white 2 tbsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
Glaze: 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted 1 to 2 tbsp. milk 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
Directions
For Crust: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Stir together flour and salt in a medium bowl. Cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in yolk and milk with a fork until a ball forms. Divide dough in half. Roll one half of dough to a 15x10 inch rectangle on a floured surface. Place dough on the bottom of a 15x10 inch jelly roll pan.
For Filling: Sprinkle crushed corn flakes over crust. Place apples over corn flakes. Stir together sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg in a small bowl. Sprinkle evenly over apples. Roll remaining dough to a 15x10 inch rectangle on a floured surface. Place dough over apples.
For Topping: Stir egg white with a fork in a small bowl until foamy. Brush over top crust. Stir together sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Sprinkle over crust. Bake 45 to 60 minutes until crust is golden brown.
For Glaze: Stir together powdered sugar, milk and vanilla until pourable. Drizzle glaze over warm bars.
Let bars cool completely before slicing.
Makes about 3 dozen bars.
