Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
2 cups all purpose flour 1/4 tsp. baking soda pinch salt 2 tbsp. poppy seeds plus additional for sprinkling 3/4 cups butter, softened 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 3/4 cup sugar plus additional for sprinkling 1 large egg 1 tbsp. finely grated lemon peel 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 large egg white, beaten to blend
Directions
Sift together flour and baking soda in a medium bowl. Stir in salt and 2 tbsp. poppy seeds. Combine butter, cream cheese and 3/4 cup sugar in a large bowl and beat until fluffy. Beat in whole egg, lemon peel and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture. Divide dough in half and form each half into a disc. Wrap each disc tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, at least 2 hours.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cut each dough disc into quarters. Roll out a dough quarter to 1/8 inch thick. Cut into shapes with a 3 inch star-shaped cookie cutter. Transfer stars to a cookie sheet, spacing 1/2 inch apart. Brush each star with some of egg white and sprinkle lightly with sugar and poppy seeds. Bake until golden, about 12 minutes. Transfer stars to a rack and cool completely. Repeat rolling and baking with remaining dough. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature.
Makes about 4 1/2 dozen cookies.
