Grilled Kentucky Style Pork Spareribs with Whiskey Glaze

Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
Glaze: 1/2 cup butter 1/3 cup vegetable oil 1 cup minced onion 2/3 cup ketchup 2/3 cup whiskey 1/2 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup orange juice 1/2 cup maple syrup 1/3 cup unsulfured molasses 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/2 tsp. pepper 1/2 tsp. liquid smoke 1/2 tsp. salt
Ribs: 9 pounds pork spareribs, cut into 5 rib sections 4 tsp. sugar
Directions
For Glaze: Melt together butter and oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and cook about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden. Stir in ketchup, whiskey, vinegar, orange juice, syrup, molasses, Worcestershire, pepper, liquid smoke and salt. Heat to a simmer, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and simmer glaze 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until thickened.
For Ribs: Prepare grill. Stir together sugar, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Rub the sugar mixture all over the ribs. Cover and let stand 45 minutes at room temperature.
Place ribs on an oiled grill rack. Grill 5 minutes per side, uncovered. Cover ribs and grill an additional 25 minutes, turning occasionally, until meat is tender. Brush ribs with the glaze and grill an additional 5 minutes. Serve immediately.
Serves 6 to 8.
