2 cups all purpose flour 3 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. salt 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening 3/4 cup milk plus additional for brushing biscuits poppy seeds
Directions
Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Grease a sheet pan. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture is crumbly. Add milk and stir until dough is evenly moistened. Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly for 30 seconds. Roll dough out to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into rounds with a floured 2 inch round biscuit cutter. Place dough rounds onto the prepared pan. Shape each biscuit into petals by making 8 evenly spaced cuts around circle, almost to the center. Press down center lightly with your fingertip to make a well. Brush tops of biscuits with some of the additional milk. Fill the well on each biscuit with poppy seeds. Bake biscuits about 12 minutes until lightly browned. Serve biscuits warm or cool.
Makes 12 biscuits.
