Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
Pastry: 4 cups all purpose flour 2 tsp. salt 1 1/3 cups solid vegetable shortening 9 tbsp. cold water
Filling: 8 cups peeled, chopped Granny Smith apples 1/4 cup sugar 3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
Syrup: 2 cups water 1 cup brown sugar
whipped cream or ice cream
Directions
For Pastry: Mix flour, salt and shortening in a large bowl until coarse crumbs form. Gradually mix in water until a dough forms. Divide dough into 4 pieces. Roll 1 piece of dough out to fit into the bottom of a 13x9 inch baking dish.
For Filling: Sprinkle 1/3 of the chopped apples over the pastry in the dish. Stir together sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle 1/3 over the apples. Roll another piece of dough out and place over the apples. Repeat layering twice more. Roll remaining piece of dough out and fit over the top of the dish. Cut several 2 inch slits all the way down through the layers. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
For the syrup: Combine brown sugar and water in a medium saucepan. Boil until sugar is dissolved, stirring constantly. Pour the syrup over the top crust.
Bake dessert about 35 to 40 minutes until bubbly and the top crust is browned. Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream.
Serves 8 to 12.
