Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
Crust: 1 cup all purpose flour 1/2 tsp. salt 1/3 cup + 1 tbsp. solid vegetable shortening 2 to 3 tbsp. iced water
Filling: 1 1/2 cups sugar 1/2 cup all purpose flour 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. salt 12 cups peeled, thinly sliced apples 2 tbsp. butter or margarine
Directions
For Crust: Combine flour and salt in a large bowl. Cut in shortening thoroughly. Add water 1 tbsp. at a time until dough is moistened and almost cleans bowl. Gather into a ball. Roll out to a 10 inch square.
For Filling: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Stir together flour, nutmeg, cinnamon and salt in a arge bowl. Add apples and toss to coat. Turn out into an ungreased 9x9 inch baking pan. Dot with butter. Place prepared crust over fruit, folding edges just inside edge of the pan. Cut several slits in top of crust. Bake 1 hour until filling is bubbly. Serve warm.
Serves 9.
