Filling: 1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup sugar 1 large egg 2 tbsp. all purpose flour 1 tsp. vanilla extract 5 cups cored, peeled, sliced Granny Smith apples
10 inch unbaked deep dish pie crust
Topping: 1/2 cup all purpose flour 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 cup cold butter, diced
whipped cream
Directions
For Filling: Place butter in a small saucepan. Cook, stirring, over medium heat until melted and lightly browned. Remove the pan from the heat and cool butter 15 minutes. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Beat together sugar and egg in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in flour, vanilla and browned butter. Stir in apple slices. Pour the filling into the crust. Place the pie on a sheet pan.
For Topping: Combine flour, both sugars and cinnamon in a medium bowl. Cut in butter until coarse crumbs form. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples. Bake the pie 20 minutes. Reduce oven to 350 degrees. Cover the edges of the pie crust with foil. Bake pie an additional 40 to 50 minutes until apples are tender and crust is golden brown. Transfer pie to a rack and cool 2 hours. Serve pie with whipped cream if desired.
Serves 8 to 10.
