Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
1 cup solid shortening 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 tbsp. cold water 3 large egg yolks 1 tbsp. baking soda 1/8 tsp. salt 12 ounces package semisweet chocolate chips 3 large egg whites 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup chopped nuts(optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream together shortening with sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar until light and fluffy. Blend in yolks. Stir together water and vanilla and add to shortening mixture. Sift together flour and soda. Stir in salt. Blend into shortening mixture just until combined. Spread batter evenly on a greased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with chocolate chips. Beat egg whites until stiff. Stir in 1 cup brown sugar and spread over batter. Sprinkle with nuts if desired. Bake 20 to 30 minutes until set and top is browned. Cool. Slice into bars.
