Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
1 pound thickly sliced white or challah bread, crusts trimmed 1/3 cup melted butter 1 cup sugar 6 large egg yolks 3 large eggs 4 cups milk 6 ounces chopped bittersweet or semisweet chocolate 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise or 1 tbsp. vanilla extract
Directions
Brush 1 side of each bread slice with melted butter. Cut bread into 1 inch cubes. Whisk together sugar, yolks and whole eggs in a large bowl. Combine milk, chocolate and vanilla bean or extract in a large saucepan. Heat to a boil, stirring to melt chocolate. Discard vanilla bean if using. Whisk milk mixture into yolk mixture. Add bread cubes and gently toss to coat. Let bread stand, stirring occasionally, about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 9x9 inch baking pan. Transfer bread mixture to prepared pan. Place baking pan in a large roasting pan. Add enough hot water to come halfway up sides of baking pan. Bake about 90 minutes until a tester comes out clean. Remove baking pan from water bath and let cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Serves 9 to 12.
