Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
Sauce: 3 pounds cored, chopped tomatoes 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped 2 large cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 2 tsp. canned chipotle chiles in adobo, minced 1/2 tsp. ground cloves 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
Meatballs: 1 pound ground beef 1 pound ground pork 1/2 cup soft fresh breadcrumbs 1 large egg 1 1/2 tsp. crumbled dried oregano 1 1/4 tsp. salt 3/4 tsp. pepper
Directions
For Sauce: Combine tomatoes, onion, garlic, chipotles and cloves in a blender. Puree until almost smooth. Heat oil in a large pot. Add puree. Cover and boil 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
For Meatballs: Combine beef, pork, breadcrumbs, egg, oregano, salt and pepper in a large bowl. Add 1/2 cup sauce and stir until well mixed. Form tablespoonfuls of meat mixture into balls. Bring sauce back to a simmer. Add meatballs. Cover and simmer until meatballs are cooked through, about 20 minutes. Serve hot.
Makes about 6 dozen meatballs.
