Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
2 cups self-rising flour, sifted 2/3 cup solid vegetable shortening 3/4 to 1 cup buttermilk
Directions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Grease a large baking sheet. Combine flour and shortening in a large cowl. Rub mixture together with your fingertips until small clumps form. Add buttermilk and stir until a soft, sticky dough forms. Shape dough into a ball and knead with floured hands, 1 to 2 minutes, until dough is smooth and pliable. Roll dough out to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into rounds with a biscuit cutter or inverted glass. Transfer biscuits to prepared pan and bake 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Serve hot.
Makes about 24 small or 16 large biscuits.
