Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
Brownies: 2 cups all purpose flour 2 cups sugar 1/2 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening, room temperature 1 cup fresh brewed strong coffee 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 large eggs 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Frosting: 1/2 cup butter, softened 2 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder 1/4 cup milk 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Directions
For Brownies: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease an 11x17 inch jelly roll pan. Stir together the flour and sugar in a large bowl. Combine the butter, shortening, coffee and cocoa in a medium saucepan. Cook, stirring, over medium high heat until mixture comes to a boil. Pour the boiling mixture over the flour. Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda and vanilla and stir well. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake about 20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Prepare the frosting while the brownies are baking.
For Frosting: Combine the butter, cocoa and milk in a large saucepan. Cook, stirring, over medium high heat until the mixture comes to a boil. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla. Stir until the frosting is smooth. Pour the warm frosting over the brownies as soon as you remove them from the oven. Transfer the pan to a rack and cool brownies completely. Cut into squares and serve.
Makes about 3 to 4 dozen brownies.
