Ingredients (view qty in metric system instead)
Topping: 1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup brown sugar 3 medium granny smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced
Cake: 1 cup applesauce 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 cup cake flour 1 cup all purpose flour 1/4 tsp. salt 2 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/4 tsp. ground cloves 1/2 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup sugar 3/4 cup brown sugar 2 large eggs
Directions
For Topping: Melt butter in a 10 inch cast-iron skillet over low heat. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over bottom of pan. Cook 3 minutes without stirring. Remove pan from heat. Arrange apple slices in an overlapping pattern over brown sugar. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
For Cake: Stir together apple sauce and baking soda in a small bowl. Whisk together both flours, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves in a medium bowl. In a separate bowl, beat together both sugars with butter until light and fluffy. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating after each addition. Stir in applesauce. Stir in flour until just combined. Spoon batter over topping and spread evenly. Bake 40 to 45 minutes until cake id golden brown and firm. Transfer skillet to a rack and cool 5 minutes. Run a knife around edges of cake. Invert skillet onto a plate. Carefully remove skillet. Serve cake warm.
Serves 8 to 10.
