Halloween Diet Tips, published on 27 Oct 2006

Don't let one night of spooks spoil your diet. Follow these tips to avoid eating more Halloween candy than you give out this year:

1. Wait as long as possible to buy Halloween candy. if you've already stocked up, store treats in a hard-to-reach place. Out of sight, out of mind.

2. Buy candy you don't really like. If you hate licorice buy licorice, etc.

3. Give snack size packs of raisins or Fig Newtons, sugar-free gum or stickers to provide a healthy alternative for you and the trick-or-treaters.

4. If you just can't resist the candy on Halloween, try to work out at the gym before dark.

5. Eat a healthy dinner with plenty of water before filling the candy bowl.

6. Brush your teeth before diving into the candy bowl. The taste of toothpaste and candy just don't mix.

7. Keep your hands and mouth busy. Have a game, book, craft etc. to keep your hands occupied. Chew gum or chat with a friend to occupy your mouth.

8. Make a bowl of fat-free popcorn to snack on while you hand out candy.

9. If you can't resist the candy bowl, choose hard or gummy candies. They generally contain less fat and calories.

10. Count your wrappers so you know how much you've eaten.

11. Throw away any left-over Halloween candy.
